The
City of Fort Lauderdale is constructing a permanent
Downtown Helistop, clearing the way for a large variety
of helicopters to conveniently access the City's Central
Business District. The new facility will be located
on the City Park Mall Parking Garage, linking the area
to Fort Lauderdale's Uptown, Miami, Palm Beach, and
as far away as Orlando and Tampa.
Helicopters are fast becoming a preferred method of
travel among businesses because they can access a smaller
landing area and are faster and more efficient than
surface transportation. Nationally, heliports and helistops
have contributed to the economic growth and vitality
of a number of progressive cities such as New York,
New Orleans, Portland and Indianapolis.
There
are over 40 helicopters based at Executive Airport,
the largest number based at any airport in the Southeastern
United States, and more than 700 helicopters throughout
Florida.
The
Helistop will be open to the public and will offer one
landing and one parking position on an elevated platform.
A furnished lobby one level below the platform will
provide a comfortable place for the traveling public
to wait for the air or surface transportation.
The City received $1.4 million from the Federal Aviation
Administration, $1 million from the Florida Department
of Transportation, and $1 million from Executive Airport
Enterprise Funds to construct the facility. Construction
should be complete by the end of the year.
